Basenji

Basenji was brought out of the Nile to be given to pharaoh as presents. The dog was small silky dog has been a companion of man. As long as the dog can get enough exercise, he can stay in the apartment. These are some of the most unique of urban dogs since they do not bark but yordel.These dogs can only have one breeding season in 1 year as other dogs have two or three.

History & Health

  • History :

This dog came from central Africa and is as old as the pharaoh is. He originally came from Congo. His African admirers preserved him when the Egypt civilization fall and this is what made him to last. There after some of the travelers from Congo brought more Basenjis to America and England. When they were brought to America, they attracted so much attention that the police had to be called to quell the crowd. After a little stay in England, the dog lovers of the place bought them and started breeding them.

  • Health :

This dog is not prone to health risk. However, occasionally he might fall sick. The main diseases that can afflict him include the hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, progressive retinal atrophy, thyroid problems among others. Before you purchase the dog, ensure that the dog has been checked and given a clean bill of health.

  • Personality :

This breed is different from other dogs in that he does not bark but just yells. However, they can make a lot of noise. Apart from this, these dogs are agile, energetic, and curious dogs. Because of his personality, he is good for adventure and hunting.

This dog requires a lot of exercise. He should be made to run and jump a lot if there is time. Since they have a lot of energy if not given the opportunity to burn all of it, they can chew anything, which can be destructive. They enjoy staying in a home that has a well-fenced yard and liked to be walked around for several hours daily. This dog breed should not be allowed to come near children or strangers. Since these dogs can scale the fenced fences, they should be watched closely or else they get out and destroy other people’s things.

These dogs are very intelligent and make a decision of their own. To train them you should be very patient. Breeders recommend that the dogs should be trained and socialized well. These dogs can be very dominant and they do not require an owner who is timid hence confidence is much advised.   • Appearance :

Basenjis have a distinctive unique appearance that is smooth and muscular. Looking at the dog, you will see a lot of power in him. Apart from these, they are elegant and have long feet. These dog’s ears are small and slightly hooded. Moreover, they also have wringled foreheads that have been a distinctive feature.

  • Size & Weight :

These dogs can grow up to 17 inches at the shoulder. Their weight can sometimes go up to 20 pounds. These dogs are strong and athletic. They are stronger than their size. Since they have light feet they are known for this. They run with long strides and effortless steps.

  • Coat and Color :

They have short, fine, coat, which come in different colors for instance red, black, brindle, tan, and some of them have white blazes.

  • Grooming :

Basenjis can groom themselves well with the vigilance of a cat and hence they are generally very clean. They shed lightly every year or occasionally. These dogs should be brushed weekly and the teeth should be cleaned as much as often. In case the nails have grown, they should be clipped.
