Plott Hound

The Plott Hound is muscular, powerful and medium sized. His skull is usually moderately flat and comes with an excellently fitted skin. His muzzle is moderate in terms of being long and resembles a square. Both his nose and lips are usually black. He has prominent eyes that are normally hazel or brown. His hanging ears are medium in length. They are also broad set. His long tail is normally set below his topline. The dog has very strong feet. His coat is glossy, fine, smooth, and short. He descends from Germany and USA. A German immigrant came with the dog to the states in the year 1750. The name of the immigrant was Johannes Georg Plott. Unlike in Germany where the dog was mainly used as a boarhound, in the USA, this dog came in handy in the hunting of bears. The descendants of Plott continued hunting the dog and the dogs were ultimately known as Plott hounds. Over the years, the dogs spread widely throughout Smoky Mountains. Each hunter had to add his touch to the breed. Eventually, the dog returned to his roots. Here, it was used to hunting both bear and boar. The dogs also were used in the hunting of mountain lions.
