Wire Fox Terrier

Wire fox terrier is a very affectionate old English dog that has been there for more than a century. It was kept for hunting and sports. The main animals it hunted are fox and rodents, and it marvelously did the job of flushing these vermin from their dens. He is very intelligent and focused and this made him a very good hunter for fox, hence its name. Nowadays, the dog is used mostly for show or as home companions.

Fox terrier originated from England in the 17th century. It came about after hunters needed a dog that could enter dens and hounds and quarries. These dogs were very suited for this job and from that time hunters started to keep them. Their main job was to flush fox and vermin from their dens. The breed was recognized first by the American Kennel Club in 1885. In 1984, AKC grouped the dogs into Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire fox Terrie, and in 1985, they were concluded to be two separate breeds.

  • Health :

Fox Terriers aren’t prone to diseases. However, they may be affected by some of these infections; deafness, Cataracts, Legg-Perthes disease, Lens Luxation, and Canine Hip dysplasia. They are smart, lively, and alert. They can be mischievous, charming, and sly sometimes. It is very funny; it can outwit you and leave you laughing due to its tactics. They bark a lot although they are extremely vigilant, which give them a score when it comes to guarding homes.

Fox Terriers have a lot of energy to use. This makes them require ample exercise, which also to keep them healthy and full of joy. Give them a rigorous exercise of about 45 -50 minutes a day. You will find out that they hardly rest, even inside the house, they will keep moving.

Since they are intelligence and self-regard, Fox Terriers can be hard to train. The training should be consistent and should start at an early age. A Fox Terrier is an active and lively dog that is short with black or white coat or brown marks. It is small and very compact which makes it a good fox hunter. It has a flat skull and medium sized and V-shaped ears which tappers. The dog’s eyes are deep-set, small, and black-colored. Its head is wedge –shaped and the neck is very strong. The tail stands upward to a 3/4length. It has a very dense double coat that is wiry in texture and its hair appears twisted and broken.

A mature mail has a height of 15.5 inches measured at the shoulder and a female 12 inches. Weight for an adult male is 18 pounds and 16 pounds for a female.

  • Coat & Color :

Their coat is wiry in textured and very dense. The hair looks like it is broken and twisted. The undercoat is short and soft. The hair is extremely thick to an extent of not feeling the skin when you touch the dog with your hand. The most common color with these dogs is white, tan, or black with tan spots. Its head is Solid colored sometimes with some marks.

  • Grooming :

Keeping your Wire Fox presentable is very crucial. You should strip its coat at least twice a year. The ears should regularly be checked in order to ensure they are not infected, no irritation, and no wax build up. Clean the ears using cotton and an approved cleanser. Brush your dog a minimum of two times a week to keep its gum healthy. The nails should be trimmed on a monthly basis.

The body of a Fox Terrier is strong and of balanced weight. It weighs a maximum of 21 pounds. The height goes to a maximum of 15 inches at the shoulder. The color of its coat is normally white with black spots on the face, ears and on the legs.
