Xoloitzcuintli

Xoloitzcuintle is one Mexican hairless breed of dog. As pets, they are warm bed dogs. Xolos are not a favorite breed. According to a genetic study recently carried out to find out the origin of Xoloitzcuintli breed, no close genetic relation between Xoloitzcuintli and the Chinese Crested Dog is evident. This breed is, not a conclusion of separate dog domestications, but it is a result of a mixture of numerous Old World canine breeds.

Xoloitzcuintle is a native of Mexico. According to the archaeological evidences, they existed in Mexico for about more than 3000 years. They are the national dogs of Mexico. They originated as a hairless mutation of Native American dogs. Aztecs considered them as holy dogs.

This breed is not prone to health and structural problems. Cold temperature and northern climate do not suit them as they hail from tropical climates. They are indoor dog breeds. Skin troubles like acne may arise, as a result, of poor breeding and negligence or due to over-bathing or excessive use of lotion and due to clogged pores. One must guard them against little Dog Syndrome. They require proper attention and care.

The coated variety possesses a short and thick coat. Only a small amount of short hair is present on the top of head, feet and the last thirds of the tail to the tip. There is no particular color of the hair; it may be of any color. However, they change their color as they grow mature. They have a tough, protective, smooth and tight skin.

A coated variety of this breed possesses a wholly covered short flat and dense coat, which is very soft and appropriate. Xolos are proud owners of a smooth and tough skin. They sweat through their skin and paw pads so it becomes necessary to keep these areas clean. To unclog the sebaceous glands, wash their feet weekly.

They are hairless array of dogs. But a coated variety also exists. Bathe them every week with a dog shampoo. Lotion them and apply oil. Trim their nails weekly. Brush, the teeth, twice or thrice a week. The chest of these dogs is quite drawn out, down reaching and fairly broad. The chest descends to the elbows. Slightly sprung ribs and perfectly straight top line. They have a robust and brawny loin. The croup is sloppy. It slopes at an angle of approximately 40 degrees off the horizontal.

Care :

Xolos are hairless dogs, but that doesn’t mean that they do not require proper care. One cannot neglect their hygiene. Weekly bathing, cutting their nails, brushing their teeth, applying oils and lotions is very necessary to keep them healthy as they are vulnerable to skin diseases.

Feeding :

The diet of this dog breed depends upon its size. They should be given 5/8 to 1.75 cups of good quality dog food daily.
