Chow Chow

A Chow Chow is an ancient dog. This dog has a number of distinctive characteristics. This breed of dog is very loyal and is regarded as an exceptional breed. The history of this native Chinese dog goes back to Shang dynasty. This breed was developed about a thousand years ago in the northern part of china for hunting, and guarding. Initially, this breed was bred was guarding and hunting only. In 1880, these dogs were imported to England. This breed was the favorite breed of Queen Victoria. Due to this reason, this breed of dog became a highly popular breed.

This is a healthy breed. The major diseases that have an effect on this breed include Hip and Elbow Dysplasia. These diseases cause lameness. Thyroid problems are also very common in these dogs. These dogs also suffer from different eye disease, i.e. primarily entropion and entropion. With poor breeding practices, these health conditions can become worse. Different kinds of skin ailments are also found in these dogs. Therefore, you are required to brush your dog regularly. The tolerance of this breed for anesthesia is not very high.

A chow chow has a personality similar to the personality of a teddy bear. The dog has a roaring bark and an imposing character. These dogs give quite scowling expressions. These dogs can hunt everything. A chow chow is also an excellent guarding dog. This dog breed is indeed a hostile breed. Only an experienced owner should keep a chow chow. These dogs get attached easily with the owner.

These dogs have a large size. For maintaining their health, they need moderate, but regular exercise. Their level of activity is highly increased in winter season. The main issue with these dogs is that these have an aggressive behavior. Mostly, these dogs show a hostile attitude towards other dogs. The utmost need of a chow chow is socialization. They like to hunt small cats and dogs. Children should not be left alone with a chow chow.

Due to the thick and hard coats, these dogs have high grooming requirements. You are required to brush a chow chow at least three times a week. If a chow chow is not brushed regularly, it will develop a doggie odor. Also, these dogs need regular bathing.
