Sussex Spaniel

It originates from England, and it is one of the dogs which were accepted by the ACK in 1884. It is well- built, making it impossible for it to run as swiftly as the other specie dogs. It has a massive body, which lies low. It has short legs, and a tail docked 5 to 7 inches. Though, docking is illegal in some countries.

The dog usually has hairy neck, legs, tail and feet. It comes in two types of coats. There is one which has a flat coat, while the other has a slightly wavy coat. It has great nose which has makes it a good companion in hunting. Those who love hunting, they can use it, it does perfect work.

This dog is said to have originated from the United Kingdom. Theories show that it came into existence in the 1800’s. The specific date is not known. There were many breeders then, though, their being is attributed to Mr. Augustus Elliot Fuller. The dogs would have become extinct during the World War II, because people were discouraged from rearing them. Thanks to Mrs. Joy Freer who devoted to keep them regardless of the circumstances. She took care of the breed and that is the reason they are their up to date.

  • Health :

These dogs are prone to some conditions. Take care of them, and in case any of the conditions is discovered, treatment should be sought immediately. They usually suffer a heart condition known as heart murmur as well as the heart enlarging. It is very dangerous and it best treated when it is realized. The most common condition is the ear infection. The dog should be vaccinated against this condition, because it is common. Prevention is better than cure. There are other diseases such as otitis exerna, and obesity. To avoid obesity, it should only be fed enough and no supplementary.


Temperament & Personality :

Sussex Spaniels are very affectionate and easy going dogs. They are happy to associate with members of the family that they live with. They are happy to stay on the couches; one may mistake them for some lazy dog. That is not the case with them. They are very active, and in the field they do a perfect job in hunting. They go for long in the fields without tiring, and they withstand any kind of climate. They are hardened.

They are bettered to do well in the fields through rigorous daily exercises. They do better job when they are in company of people who cherish them. That way they are happy, and they do what they do best to the best of their capability.

  • Activity Requirements :

Sussex Spaniels become fat rapidly, especially when they are given excess food. It is therefore important that they are taken for exercises on a daily basis. This will help them to keep fit. It is important to note that they get bored easily. In that case, they should be engaged in activities which take energy, and which will make happy. They enjoy to be taken to activities like jogging, walking and going to dip in water.

  • Trainability :

It is best to begin training the Sussex Spaniels at the tender age when they are still puppies. It is easier to train the puppies because they abide by what the owner instills in them. Though, as easy going as this dog is known to be, it can be annoying during training. It needs someone who does not cane it or take disciplinary actions against it. If this occurs, it becomes hard to train it, because it becomes ignorant.

  • Behavioral Traits :

They love communicating at all times. Be it in the house or in the field. They will always bark to inform the owner of what is happening around them. This is helpful, while at the same time it is disturbing. The owner ought to train them, when to bark and when not to. They can deprive the family of peaceful sleep, especially in the night when people come to the house

When well trained to identify with new people, they will be okay with seeing them, but in cases which they have not been trained; they will stick with the family members. This then results to them being harsh towards visitors who are strangers to them.

They appear to be masculine, and gold liver colored. They have a short neck, and large hazel eyes.

The Sussex Spaniels stand at a height of 13 to 15 inches, and have a weight of 35 to 45 pounds.

  • Coat & Color :

They come in two variety of coats, that is the flat cover and slightly wavy color. They are only available in one color, the gold liver. They should not have any extra shading.

  • Grooming :

Brush their hair on a daily basis. The dog’s feet hair is the one which is necessary for cutting. They should be bathed in accordance to the veterinary instructions. To ensure Sussex Spaniels are safe from gum diseases, brush their teeth on a weekly basis, and if possible, on a daily basis. To make sure that their teeth is strong and long-lasting, brush them on a regular basis.

It is made of masculine body and it has a weight of 35 to 45 pounds approximately.

Care :

They should be taken care of, by taking them to exercise. If they do not exercise, they are more likely to get bored and the worst of it all develop lifestyle diseases just like the human beings.

Feeding :

They best take a balance of carbohydrate and protein. They should not feed excessively, they can be obese. This is not good for their health.
