Welsh Terrier

It resembles the smaller version of Airdale Terrier with a head that has a rectangular shape. It has almond shaped eyes, set relatively wide apart and dark brown. It has small cat-like feet and front legs that are round and straight. The leveled back forms a straight line. It also has dew claws that can be removed. Otherwise, all puppies are born black in color and the marking on their jackets continue to remain black as the coats lighten over time.

Actually, the Welsh terrier name is not the original name of the breed; the original names are Old English Terrier, Old Reddish Black Wirehaired Terrier and Black and Tan wirehaired terrier. Otherwise, it originated from Wales where hunters bred it for hunting reasons and in this particular case; it hunted the otter, fox and badgers. The trick was to have the Welsh Terrier dog drive out the animals as the hunter waited for them to come out.

The first time the breed had an appearance was in 1884 in England. It went to America for the first time in 1888, courtesy of Prescott Lawrence. Otherwise, the breed deserved recognition in respect to its ability to track, hunt, and acting as a watchdog and doing tricks.

  • Health :

The breed is prone to a couple of health issues, although it is a healthy dog in general. It is susceptible to allergies that range from food allergies to allergies caused by airborne allergens. So depending on the allergy then the treatment will vary and advisable to see a veterinarian. It is also prone to epilepsy making it crucial to take the pet to the vet in case you observe seizures. It is also prone to glaucoma and hypothyroidism. All of these diseases are treatable.

It has an amazing personality comprising of cheerfulness, active in what they do, quite intelligent, alert and agile. It is quite social with children and patient even with rough play. It is a curious animal, very energetic, can dare and best left with an active family. It can be timid and unsure, hence needs directions of what to do. It can be conniving when it needs to divert a person’s attention to something else.

As mentioned, it will flourish in an active family and considering it is playful it will need a lot of other things to do besides chasing after a ball. It is detrimental that they know their roles in the homestead. They need leadership that is quite firm but not too harsh as they respond quite poorly to harsh disciplinary actions. So as an owner you need to have an air of authority but calm while at it. Similarly, they can be aggressive and rude hence the need to train them well when they are still young.

Considering they are quite intelligent they can be high headed when they sense the owner is not completely in charge.
