Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pem is a low ground and long dog. The skull is flat and wide between the ears. This dog’s stop is usually moderate. His topline is level. Jaws meet scissors bite, and his nose is black. The eyes are oval with shades of brown that largely depend on the color of the coat. His eye’s rims are usually black. His erect ears are usually medium in terms of size. They taper slightly in a certain rounded point. His legs are short. The dog’s feet are normally oval in shape. The dog has his dewclaws removed. At certain times, the dog can be born without a tail. His coat is double and has thick and short undercoat that is weather resistant. The outer coat is longer and coarser.

Pem originates from Pembrokeshire, Wales. This enchanting dog has a background in folklore. He sprang from lairs of elves and fairies. Based on a legendary story, as some children were going about their business in the field one day, they came across a number of puppies. They thought of them to be puppies. However, they noticed something quite unique about these newly found ‘puppies’. They bundled them up, carried, and took with them home.

Their parents were quick to notice that these puppies were not foxes but dogs. This made the children quite delighted. During their growth, these dogs became cherished companions. They learnt to assist children in taking care of their family’s cattle. Pems have tremendously grown in popularity. Today, they top the list of breeds when it comes to family pets. In fact, England’s Queen Elizabeth II received a Pem from her father in 1933.

  • Health :

This breed is generally healthy. Despite this, like other breeds, Pems are susceptible to particular health conditions. A number of conditions can affect these dogs. Hip Dysplasia is one such condition. This inherited disorder affects the thighbone. When the dog suffers from this condition, the thighbone fails to fit perfectly to its hip joint. A number of dogs show lameness and pain on either one or both legs. Others do not normally display any outward sign of discomfort. As the dog ages, it is common for him/her to develop arthritis.

Cataracts is the other condition the dog can suffer from, it causes opacity on eye’s lens. This results to poor vision. When your dog suffers from this condition, he or she usually has eyes with cloudy appearance. This affliction mostly occurs during old age. Surgery treatment can be used to counter the condition.

Cutaneous Asthenia can also affect your dog. This also goes by the name Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, dominant collagen dysplasia, or dermatosparaxis. This is a condition which brings with it stretches, looseness and fragility to the skin’s defective connective tissue. It leads to blood blisters or excessive bruising as it can affect the blood vessels as well. Cystinuria, Degenerative Myetopathy (DM), Epilepsy, Retina dysplasia and Progressive Retinal Atrophy are some of the other conditions which can also affect Pem.

These days, most people use this dog as pets rather what is usually expected, a working dog. The dog is intelligent, loving, and happy. At times, he can be very stubborn or independent.

Training this dog is very easy. however, never expect him to be subservient. This dog prefers to think for himself.

Care :

These dogs usually require plenty of exercises daily. They are excellent for apartments. The only condition is that you give as much physical stimulation as possible. Fractures are common because they have long backs and short legs and thus should be allowed to hop up from any modest height.

Feeding :

The recommended daily food intake is ¾ to 1.5 cups of dog food. Ensure the food is dry and of high quality. If possible, ensure the meal is divided into three or two meals every day. Do not allow him to eat too much because he can turn out to be obese.
