Cesky Fousek

Cesky Fouseks are gun dogs who are great at hunting and chasing in fields, water and even upland. These dogs have now become popular as pets because of their easy going nature and extremely loyal attitude towards their owners. These are strong animals that require a firm master, they are friendly and when socialized well from their childhood they are good with kids and other pets.

  • History :

The origin of the breed dates back as early as the 14th century. They are believed to have been gifted by Emperor Charles IV to Margrave Ludwig in 1348. These were hunting dogs with great agility and speed. Their fame soon spread outside the Czech border and the Czech kennel club named them as Cesky Fousek in 1896. This breed was threatened with extinction somewhere in the 1920s but was then carefully bred back to its current state of abundance.

The Cesky Fousek is a breed that has been administered and fostered with great deliberation and care. Diligent breeders have done their utmost to ensure that this dog suffers from almost no hereditary or genetic defects. These are very hearty and healthy dogs that can thrive on activity. Alopecia and Canine Hip Dysplasia are the only issues which can rarely afflict this breed.

  • Personality :

A Cesky Fousek is a hunter dog with the strength and agility required for this occupation. However, they adapt very well to being human companions and are very affectionate towards their owners. If socialized well from the beginning they are friendly towards strangers. These are very joyful dogs that love to please their masters and would do almost anything that is demanded of them. They are also great with kids.

  • Activity Requirements :

Cesky Fousek is a hunting breed that is used to be on the go from morning to night each and every day. Thus, these are no slackers but extremely active dogs that can do well only with very active families. They are best suited for those given to hiking or jogs on a daily basis. If not a jog then atleast a long walk is mandatory every day. The dog needs to be exercised a minimum of twice a day and should ideally be provided with a well fenced backyard that has enough room for it to run about. The fence should be around 6 ft tall and should be embedded deep in the ground as these dogs can be excellent escapists when left to their own devices.

  • Trainability :

A more willing to please breed than Cesky Fousek would be hard to find. These dogs are very keen to follow their masters and are as such exceptionally easy to train. They do need proper socialization for them to be good with kids, other pets and strangers. The trainer should ideally involve them in a multitude of activities so that they do not get bored. A firm and calm trainer is best suited for this dog.

  • Behavioral Traits :

This is a hunting dog with a natural tendency to chase livestock and other animals. They are very agile and active dogs who are at home both on land and in water. They are also great at hunting even in the hilly areas. These are hardworking dogs that will go to any lengths to please their masters. They love to play and are fun loving.

Appearance and Grooming :

  • Appearance :

This is a wirehaired dog with facial mustache and beard. They have a long and lean head with deep amber or deep chestnut almond shaped eyes. The eyes have an intelligent yet gentle softness to them. Their muscular bodies have a lean look and are very well proportioned. There is a marked difference in the body size of a male and a female Cesky Fousek.

  • Size and Weight :

The females stand around 24 inches tall and weigh between 49 to 62 pounds. Males are much bigger with an average height of 25 inches and weigh between 62 to 75 pounds.

  • Coat and Color :

This breed has a wire haired coat that consists of three kinds of hair. The undercoat is dense yet soft while the top coat is wiry with 3 to 4cm long hair. They also have guard hair which is very rough and straight on their shoulders and flanks. The color of the coat can vary from dark roan to brown. Markings and patches are allowed in the coat.

  • Grooming :

These dogs come equipped with an all weather coat, they should not be bathed often as this can lead to loss of oil from their coat. Thorough brushing with a steel brush and an occasional wiping with chamois can add gleam to their coats. Toe nails should be clipped regularly.

They spread their love equally amongst the family and are ready to follow anyone with the Frisbee, car keys or the gun.

Care :

Cesky Fousek can catch a chill if left wet for long. Give them a thorough rub down if they have taken a dousing.

Feeding :

Broth, water and tanned food work best for this breed.
