Mudi

Mudis have always been great sheepherders known for their herding instincts. They are extremely courageous and powerful and can overpower even much bigger animals like a wild boar. These dogs have a very pleasant disposition and are loyal and protective towards their masters. These dogs are very astute and train quickly. This breed is wary of strangers but does not attack them unless provoked. These are even tempered dogs.

Mudi is a Hungarian dog that got its own separate identity in 1930. Till this time all Hungarian herd dogs were put under the same umbrella. This breed is not the product of any specific thought but seems to have come into existence on its own. It is a very rare breed even in its own country. Puli and Komondor are the more common herding dogs found in Hungary. The breed was in danger of becoming extinct until some good breeders intervened.

  • Health :

Mudis are fairly healthy dogs and the only rare health problem faced by them is hip dysplasia.

These are even tempered dogs who fear nothing and are extremely intelligent. They are multifaceted and good at almost all dog sports. This breed loves to play Flyball and Frisbee. Their natural agility and strong bodies make them perfect for hunting and herding activities. They are also very loyal to their masters and make excellent watch guards. Aggression is very rare in this breed and while they may be wary of strangers they are not aggressive towards them.

  • Activity Requirements :

These are very active dogs that need to be exercised dog. A jog or brisk walk everyday is mandatory and they also need open spaces at home where they can run about and play through the day. The dog can adapt to living in apartments but it is not advisable to keep him in such a cramped space as it curbs his natural tendency to run and play. They love to play games and are excellent in most of them.

  • Trainability :

These are very intelligent dogs and can be trained even quicker than a Border Collie. They are pack dogs who are used to following the leader, thus establish yourself as the boss from the very beginning. When going for walks the dog should be made to heel beside you so that he looks up to you as the leader of the pack.

These are well mannered dogs that can be very friendly and loyal. They have a tendency to attach themselves to any one particular person in a family. If trained from the beginning these dogs are good towards kids and other pets. They can be noisy at times and might bark unnecessarily.

Appearance and Grooming :

  • Appearance :

A Mudi has a wedge shaped head with inverted ‘v’ shaped ears that are always erect. They have oval eyes that are dark brown in color, their hind legs are placed wide apart for better balance and their back is elongated and straight.

  • Size and Weight :

These are medium sized dogs that stand 14 to 20 inches tall and weigh somewhere between 18 to 29 pounds.

  • Coat and Color :

The coat of a Mudi is very dense and can be wither curly or wavy. The hair length is around 2 inches and the coat is glossy and healthy looking often forming tufts. This dog comes in various colors which include, brown, grey, black, white, fallow and red. Some are even a shade of blue named ‘Cifra’, however these are very rare.

  • Grooming :

This breed is not a heavy shedder and has a coat that pretty much takes care of itself. All that these dogs need is a good brushing and combing once in a while to ensure that all the dead hair is removed and no matting takes place.

These are small to medium sized dogs whose compact bodies are amazingly wiry and strong.

Care :

These dogs are easy to care for and are generally healthy and happy with moderate exercising. While they can adapt to being apartment dogs it is better to keep them in a house with a yard as they love to race about in open spaces.

Feeding :

Mudi need to be given premium quality food. They thrive well on canned food and potable water. While cooked eggs, fruits and cottage cheese might be a Mudi’s preferred diet do not make the percentage of these more than 10 percent of its daily food quota. Table food should also not be given to a Mudi as this can lead to obesity and mineral imbalances.
